4 Watercolor Pencil Techniques You Have To Try!

Introduction:
Watercolor pencils are similar to normal colored ones but instead of wax or oil-based binder they contain a water-soluble one, this means that when activated with water, they can be used just like watercolor pencils. If you wish to know how watercolor paints and watercolor pencils differ then click here. However, for now, let's learn about the 4 main techniques that you should use when using watercolor pencils.

Wet-on-Dry:
Start by wetting the tip of the pencil first rather than adding the water later. The paper will remain dry, and as you start to draw, you will find that the color won't fade that quickly but constant wetting will be needed.

Dry-on-Wet:
For this method, wet the paper, then directly use the dry pencil on it. You may have to work quickly so the paper doesn't dry when you are still painting.

Wet-on-Wet:
To use this technique you have to first wet the paper, then wet the pencil by dipping it in water, as you start to color you will notice that the colors will intensify. You will also start to see big fuzzy lines appearing on the paper.

Adding water later:
This technique is my favorite and it also happens to be more popular too. You can start by sketching out your design and filling it in, then once you have colored in the sketch, use a wet brush to start giving it effects. If you plan on blending I recommend using light pressure since the color will intensify once you add water and it makes the blending process easier.

I hope these techniques will help you when painting with watercolor pencils. Check out some of my other articles to learn more about watercolor pencils and how to use them.
