Water Control:
When dipping your brush in water, it's necessary to keep in mind how much pigment you need. It's established that the more water you add, the lighter the tone will be, and more pigment will give you a darker shade. However, too much of either thing can be damaging to your work.
So to know if you have the right amount here is a little piece of information you'll need to remember. If the color is hard to control (since it spreads too quickly) and is leaving bits of paper in your work, then chances are, you have added too much water and need more pigment to balance it out. If your color is drying rather quickly and is hard to maneuver (since it stays in the same place) then you probably have added too much pigment.
Use Multiple Mediums:
If you are creating a watercolor art piece, you are not only subjected to watercolors. In fact, you can use different mediums of art to make your art pop out. For example, you can use white guache paint or a white color pencil to create juicy highlights. Using different art forms can really enhance your painting, experiment with different stationeries, and find out ways you can incorporate them into your painting.
Try Different Techniques:
Use different techniques, there are multiple methods to add texture and uniqueness to your painting just by using the same medium. If you are interested in watercolor techniques then you can read all about the watercolor salt technique in my blog.
Use the Right Tones:
When you blend watercolor paints together you may not always achieve your desired result. Sometimes the color you want to create by mixing other paints ends up getting muddy or dull. If this situation seems familiar to you, then chances are you may using the wrong shades of colors. If you understand the concept of warm colors and cool colors you would know that they both are very different. So for example, mixing a warm yellow with a cool blue, may not give you the vibrant green you were hoping for. So I suggest, referencing a color wheel when you are mixing paints, in order to get the correct shade.
I hope these pointers have served useful and have hopefully cleared any points that you may not have understood. Watercolors can sometimes be struggling to use but when knowing the proper information and the proper methods, watercoloring can be easier and better.
